A hotel’s general manager wears many hats. He or she hires and oversees hotel staff, ensures that daily functions of the hotel run smoothly, manages and oversees hotel finances, and more, all while making sure guests have a pleasant experience during their stay.

You Must Love People
As a hotel manager, you will have to deal with people on a regular basis--namely, employees and guests. You must be able to motivate the hotel’s employees to do their jobs to the best of their abilities, and you must have the interpersonal skills needed to deal with guest complaints and concerns in a manner that ensures their ultimate happiness and wellbeing.
You Should be Able to Lead by Example and Motivate
A successful hotel manager must be a leader who attains trust and confidence of the team by setting an example and practicing what they preach. A hotel manager must improve engagement from all associates, which leads to motivation.
You Must Know How to Delegate
As a hotel manager, one must be able to clearly define, explain and communicate the hotel’s vision, goals and values and then set example and delegate department leaders and associates to take it from there.
You Must Accept Responsibility and Accountability
As a leader, you must be ready to accept the responsibility for the results even when you have delegated the tasks. Accountability is an integral part of the success of a hotel manager, as this relates to positive results.
You Should Have a Strong Grasp of Finances
If you hate math, then being a hotel manager is probably not the job for you. Hotel managers set hotel budgets, monitor hotel income and expenses, prepare financial reports, and more.
You Must Be Flexible and Organized
Since a successful hotel manager is constantly working on a variety of tasks relating to hotel operations, he or she must have the ability to switch from task to task with ease without losing track of what he or she is doing.
You Must Have Experience and Education
Larger hotels will require you to have a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management in order to be considered for a hotel management position. Experience is also important: ideally, you should have many years of experience working in the hospitality industry before applying to be a general manager, as this will have taught you the ins and outs of hotel operations.
